Biographical
George Chapman (c. 1559 – 12 May 1634) was an English poet, playwright, and translator. He was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, the son of a yeoman farmer. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied classics and philosophy. After graduating, he went to London and began his career as a writer.
Chapman's early work was influenced by the poetry of Edmund Spenser and the plays of William Shakespeare. He wrote several plays in the Elizabethan style, including "The Blind Beggar of Alexandria" (1598),"Eastward Ho" (1605),and "The Widow's Tears" (1612). He also wrote a number of poems, including "The Shadow of Night" (1594),"Ovid's Banquet of Sense" (1595),and "Hymnus in Cynthiam" (1595).

In 1616, Chapman published his translation of Homer's Iliad. This was followed by his translation of the Odyssey in 1615. Chapman's translations were highly praised for their accuracy and their poetic beauty. They are still considered to be among the best translations of Homer ever written.
Chapman continued to write plays and poems until his death in 1634. He was buried in St Giles in the Fields, London.
