On May 18, 1965, Lieutenant Commander Bart Creed USN was shot down over Laos while flying a bombing mission against North Vietnamese targets. He ejected from his A-4 Skyhawk and landed in a remote jungle area. Creed was alone, injured, and unarmed. He had no food, water, or shelter. And he was in the middle of a war zone.
Creed knew that he had to get out of the jungle and back to safety. But he was surrounded by enemy forces, and he didn't know which way to go. He decided to head west, towards Thailand. He hoped that he would eventually reach friendly territory.
Creed walked for days, eating berries and drinking water from streams. He slept in trees at night, afraid to be on the ground. He was constantly on the lookout for enemy soldiers, and he had to be careful not to make any noise.
After 11 days, Creed finally reached Thailand. He was exhausted, hungry, and sick. But he had made it out of the jungle alive.
